Selling luxury watches on eBay.co.uk (UK)

eBay.co.uk selling rules for watch dealers: Authenticity Guarantee from £1,500 via Stoll & Co., UK business fees, Premium Service, and listing standards.

Got a question about this guide? Use Open to continue it in Claude or ChatGPT.

This guide covers eBay.co.uk (United Kingdom) only. Authenticity Guarantee thresholds, selling fees and eligibility rules are set per marketplace and do not transfer across borders. A watch listed on eBay.co.uk is not covered by eBay.com's or eBay.de's programme, and UK Authenticity Guarantee applies only to buyers with a UK delivery address. Selling in the US? Use the eBay.com guide. Selling in Germany? Use the eBay.de guide.

A practical guide for UK watch sellers and dealers. All figures sourced from eBay's official Seller Centre and Help pages. Last verified: 13 August 2026.

Always check eBay's own pages before you act on a figure here

eBay changes fees, thresholds and programme rules regularly, the UK and German rate cards both changed in February 2026. Every section below links to the official eBay page it came from, so you can verify any number in one click.

This guide reflects eBay's published documentation as of 13 August 2026. Where eBay has updated since, eBay's page is authoritative, not this one. If you spot a discrepancy, tell us at sales@worldwatch.market and we'll correct it.

Quick wins: do these five things first

  1. Check your category is right, it's worth about 2% of the first £750 on every sale. Wristwatches (31387) sits under Watches, Parts & Accessories at 12.9% up to £750. The parent Jewellery & Watches category charges 14.9% up to £1,000. Getting this wrong costs you money on every single listing, permanently.
  2. Price at £1,500 or above where the watch justifies it. At £1,500+ Authenticity Guarantee applies automatically and free: eBay covers the authentication and the tracked next-day delivery to the buyer. Below that you carry the return risk yourself.
  3. Qualify for eBay Premium Service: it's 10% off your final value fees. On a £3,000 watch that's £16.43 back on every sale. The requirements are operational, not financial: free 3-working-day delivery, a £10-or-less express option, tracking on everything listed at £20+, and 30-day returns.
  4. Use all 80 characters in your title: brand, model, reference number, case size, material, movement, year. Buyers search reference numbers.
  5. Shoot 12–24 photos, minimum 1600×1600 px, no filters, no watermarks, no text overlay. Show every scratch, the caseback, the clasp, the box and papers.

The one thing that kills a sale before it starts: listing an Authenticity Guarantee–eligible watch as local collection only, or accepting a delivery address outside the UK. Both make the listing ineligible and strip the badge.

1. The numbers: fees

Business sellers: Watches, Parts & Accessories (#260324, which contains Wristwatches 31387)

Source: Fees for business sellers

ComponentRate
Final value fee, first £75012.9%
Final value fee, portion above £7503%
Per-order fee£0.30 (orders ≤£10) / £0.40 (orders >£10)
Regulatory operating fee0.35% of the total sale
Insertion fee, no Shop£0.30 per listing

Category matters. The parent Jewellery & Watches (#281) row is 14.9% up to £1,000, then 4%. Always confirm your listing sits in Wristwatches, not a jewellery catch-all.

Final value fees are charged on the total amount of the sale: item price + postage + tax.

Worked example: a £3,000 watch

ComponentAmount
FVF, first £750 @ 12.9%£96.75
FVF, £750–£3,000 @ 3%£67.50
Regulatory operating fee @ 0.35%£10.50
Per-order fee£0.40
Total£175.15

With eBay Premium Service (10% off the FVF percentage on Premium Service listings): £158.73.

(Item price only; your real fee will be slightly higher because postage and tax are included in the calculation.)

International fees (business sellers)

Source: Fees for business sellers

Buyer locationFee
Eurozone & Northern Europe1.05%
US & Canada1.8%
All other countries2.0%

Note: shipping outside the UK also voids Authenticity Guarantee eligibility. If the watch is above £1,500, an international sale means losing the badge and paying an international fee.

Unlike the US and Germany, a UK Shop does not reduce your watch commission rate. eBay UK publishes a single business-seller rate for this category. A Shop buys you listing allowances and shopfront tools, not a lower percentage. Subscribe based on listing volume, not on fee savings. (Verify against the current rate card before republishing: this is inferred from eBay publishing only one rate row for the category.)

2. Authenticity Guarantee: the core mechanic

UK authentication is carried out by Stoll & Co., established 1982, operating a dedicated UK facility. Their address appears in your order details after the sale.

What qualifies

Source: Authenticity Guarantee watches, seller terms

Eligible:

  • Watches listed in the Wristwatches primary category
  • Vintage watches with commonly replaced aftermarket parts, straps, bracelets, crystals, spring bars, gaskets, remain eligible
  • New and pre-owned

Not eligible:

  • Customised watches: painted dial, aftermarket bezel, added gemstones. The most common disqualification for dealers.
  • Engraved watches
  • Smart watches, fitness trackers, watch parts, watch accessories
  • Local collection listings
  • P.O. Box and BFPO delivery addresses
  • Any delivery address outside the United Kingdom
  • Anything sold on a site other than eBay.co.uk

Pocket watches: unresolved. eBay's help article lists Pocket Watches as an eligible category at £1,500+; the seller terms and buyer FAQs on pages.ebay.co.uk list pocket watches among excluded/miscategorised items. Both are official eBay UK pages. Check with eBay before listing a valuable pocket watch on the assumption it will be authenticated.

Eligibility is defined by the buyer, not the seller

Every official eBay UK page frames eligibility as: sold on eBay.co.uk, to a buyer with a UK delivery address. Unlike eBay.com, no seller-registration-country requirement is published for watches. Don't assume one exists, but don't assume it doesn't, either, if you're registered outside the UK.

The timeline

Source: Authenticity Guarantee watches, seller FAQs

  1. Watch sells → you post to Stoll & Co., not to the buyer
  2. You must use a service with signature confirmation, and eBay does not cover your postage to the authenticator: that cost is yours
  3. Inspection within 2 business days of receipt
  4. If it passes: posted to the buyer with tracked, next-day, signature-required delivery, paid by eBay
  5. Items sold for £450 or more get signature-required delivery

If it fails

  • "If the inspector cannot determine that the product is authentic, or if the product is not as described in the listing, the item won't be sent on to the buyer and they will receive their money back."
  • The watch is returned to you and you are not charged for the return postage.
  • eBay may refund the buyer before the item reaches you; the refund is then deducted once you have it back.

Returns

Source: Authenticity Guarantee watches, seller FAQs

  • Buyers return to the authenticator, not to you, within your stated return window.
  • The security tag must remain attached and untampered or the return is not eligible.
  • The buyer must also post with signature confirmation.
  • The authenticator re-checks authenticity and condition within 2 business days.
  • If it passes, the buyer is refunded and the watch comes back to you by tracked next-day delivery at no cost to you.

3. Shipping and packing checklist

  • Post to Stoll & Co., address in your order details. Never directly to the buyer.
  • Use a signature-confirmation service. This is mandatory, and the cost is yours.
  • Pack tight: bubble wrap or tissue paper, no movement inside the box.
  • Send only what you listed. No extra straps, no bonus tools, no business cards.
  • Send the collateral you listed: box, papers, links, warranty card.
  • Insure it for the full value.
  • Meet your stated dispatch time. Late dispatch damages your seller standard and your Premium Service eligibility.

4. Building the listing

Title: 80 characters, use all of them

Source: Optimising your listings for Best Match

[Brand] [Model] [Reference No.] [Case Size] [Material] [Movement] [Dial] [Year]

Luxury watch buyers search by reference number far more than by adjective.

Photos

RuleSpec
Maximum24 pictures, free
Minimumat least one photo, 500 px on the longest side
Recommended resolution1600 × 1600 px
Max file size12 MB per photo
Prohibitedborders, added text, graphics, advertising, watermarks of any kind, stock photos for used or faulty items

Shot list: dial straight on · caseback · both sides of the case, lugs, crown guard · clasp inside and out with reference codes · bracelet stretch shown honestly · every scratch and ding close up · box, papers, warranty card, spare links · only what the buyer will actually receive.

Item specifics

Complete every required field and as many recommended fields as you can. Buyers filter searches by item specifics, and your listing only appears in a filtered result if the matching specific is populated. For watches, prioritise: Brand, Model, Reference Number, Case Material, Case Size, Movement, Year Manufactured, Band Material, Dial Colour, Water Resistance.

Description

Cover explicitly: provenance, full condition, service and repair history, any customisation, and every defect. Under-describing a flaw is the fastest route to a failed authentication, the authenticator checks the watch against your photographs and description, and a mismatch fails the item just as counterfeiting does.

5. eBay Premium Service: worth chasing

Source: eBay Premium Service

The UK equivalent of Top Rated Plus. Requirements:

  • You're a UK-registered business seller
  • You're currently a Top Rated Seller on eBay UK
  • Free domestic delivery within 3 working days
  • An express option within 2 working days, for no more than £10
  • Tracked services on all items listed at £20 and above
  • 30-day returns guaranteed
  • Your return address is in the UK

Benefits:

  • 10% discount on final value fees for Premium Service listings: on a £3,000 watch that's about £16.43
  • Increased visibility in eBay search
  • Premium Service badge on search results and item pages
  • eBay's own figure: delivery within 3 days "can help increase your sales by as much as 7%"

The discount applies to the FVF percentage only, not to the per-order fee or the regulatory operating fee.

6. Pre-flight checklist

  • Primary category is Wristwatches (31387), not Jewellery & Watches
  • Price set deliberately relative to the £1,500 threshold
  • No customisation, no engraving (or the watch is priced/listed outside the programme)
  • Title uses all 80 characters, reference number included
  • 12–24 photos, ≥1600×1600, no filters or overlays, all flaws shown
  • Every required item specific completed
  • Delivery: UK addresses only, no local collection, no P.O. Box or BFPO
  • Postage to the authenticator booked with signature confirmation and insurance
  • Dispatch time realistic
  • Premium Service criteria met if you want the 10% fee discount

Why list through Worldwatch

We handle every technical requirement for you.

Every eBay requirement in this guide, item specifics, photo standards, category placement, Authenticity Guarantee eligibility, postage configuration, is handled on our side. A listing published from Worldwatch is built to eBay's current technical specification, so you don't have to track rate-card changes, new mandatory item specifics or shifting programme thresholds yourself.

That is a competitive advantage over dealers listing without us. Correctly structured listings surface in more filtered searches and more comparison results, which means potentially more buyers finding you.

We also have direct contact with eBay, and we're here to assist you.
